Head of School Update
LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL, MATT MILLETT
July 17, 2020
Good Evening Legacy Parents,
As many of you know, this afternoon Governor Newsom announced a new framework for
reopening K-12 public and private schools in California. Among the new requirements, schools
located in counties currently on the state monitoring list must remain closed for in-person
learning until the county has been removed for at least 14 days. Los Angeles County is currently
on the state monitoring list. While Santa Clarita is part of Los Angeles County, our community
has experienced much lower instances of COVID-19 than what is reflected in the greater LA
County numbers. A state and county-wide directive of this nature should allow for greater
flexibility in consideration of private schools.
We believe that it is not only necessary to provide an opportunity for our students to return to
campus, it is our responsibility to advocate for the excellent education our students receive each
school year. We have already reached out to local officials to discuss this mandate in more detail.
In response to the new requirements, Legacy is submitting a formal request to receive a waiver to
open for in-person instruction and online learning based on our location and program.
We have carefully and thoughtfully applied the guidelines set forth by state and county
governing authorities. Through due diligence, we have developed a reopening plan that
appropriately implements the recommendations provided by the Los Angeles County
Department of Public Health. In addition, our reopening plan has been reviewed and approved by
local medical professionals. If permitted to open, I am confident that our reopening plan will
enable us to meet the needs of every student at Legacy.
We are hopeful that we will receive a waiver in the remaining weeks before the start of school.
We pray that Los Angeles County will see a decline in new cases and be removed from the state
monitoring list. We will continue to plan for a reopening on August 26, while actively preparing
our DLP if mandated to remain closed.
Legacy is a wonderful place with tremendous support from our families and the greater Santa
Clarita Valley. These challenges will be addressed with creative and effective solutions that
allow us to maintain The Legacy Way during the 2020-21 school year.
Our reopening plan is here for review.
Thank you for your prayers and support. Have a wonderful weekend and stay healthy.
